The Straits Times - Denim waste put to good use
Singapore Nov 1, 2006 - Fashion designer Charlene O'Brien enjoys the soft- touch of bales of fabric - re-spun from denim waste collected from jeans factories. Along with soapless showers and chemical-free grease remover, these were some of the whimsical and environmen- tally-friendly concepts on show at the two-day Eco-Products International Fair 2006. The public is invited to visit the free exhibition and learn about money-saving eco-friendly products and services. The fair brings together consumers and companies to help build a thriving industry. Speaking at the opening of the fair at the Suntec Convention Centre yesterday, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim estimated that the industry will account for 1.5 per cent of Singapore's annual gross domestic product, and provide about 35,000 jobs - PHOTO: EDWIN KOO
